Turn compliance into confident action in this interactive 75-minute workshop for charter champions in people operations and executive roles. This session brings policies such as the SB 848 compliant Student Boundaries Policy to life through real hiring decisions, helping you spot risk early and apply consistent safeguards. Through hands-on activities like policy interpretation, job description review, interview scenarios, and reference check analysis, participants will sharpen their ability to screen effectively, make stronger hiring decisions, and protect students. 12:45 PM - 2:15 PM: Contractual Risk Transfer for School Safety: What Charter Schools Should Know Before Signing

Speakers: Kennedy Vu, Kobié Jacobs

A signature can move work forward, but it can also move risk in the wrong direction.
Join us for a practical session for charter school leaders, operations teams, and other school decision makers who want to better understand how contracts, certificates of insurance, and property lease terms can affect school protection behind the scenes. This session explores how routine agreements can quietly shift responsibility, weaken insurance protections, and create costly surprises when key details are overlooked. Through relatable charter school scenarios, visual red flags, and audience engagement built around real-world decision points, participants will gain a clearer understanding of contractual risk transfer, COI review, and common lease provisions that can place unexpected obligations back on the school. The session highlights common trouble spots, practical review habits, and the key questions charter school personnel should ask before signing. Attendees will leave with a stronger framework for reviewing agreements more confidently and using them as one important layer of protection for school operations, property, and organizational resilience.

2:30 PM -4:00 PM: The Employee Lifecycle: HR, Risk, and Workers’ Compensation at Every Stage

Speakers: Jamie Alfonso, Susan Diamanti, Audra Powers

This session walks charter school HR and leadership teams through the full employee lifecycle, from hiring to separation, showing exactly where risk is most prevalent and how to stay ahead of it. Learn how to spot hiring red flags, strengthen supervision and documentation, increase skills to utilize workers' compensation loss trends to reduce future losses, and terminations. Using a clear, step-by-step flowchart, participants will follow the lifecycle of a typical stress claim—from initial triggers such as employee performance concerns or requests for reasonable accommodation, through the filing of a claim. The session will also explore how these situations often intersect with leave of absence requests and the complexities that arise during that process. Emphasis will be placed on practical decision points, documentation strategies, and communication best practices at each stage. Finally, the workshop will address effective approaches to supporting a smooth and compliant return-to-work process. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to proactively manage risk and support employee well-being.

Through relatable school scenarios, interactive elements, and memorable visuals, participants will gain insight into how employment lawsuits unfold in an education setting and what decision points matter most. The session highlights common leadership missteps in schools and provides practical strategies to improve consistency, strengthen documentation, and involve HR and/or an employment attorney at the right time. Attendees will leave better equipped to support their staff while protecting their school community. Give your organization a proactive “employment legal health check” and learn how to address employee issues before they escalate.
